From Bland to Bam: How to stage a boring bedroom with basics like Bed in a Bag
Oftentimes
people don’t know where to begin when prepping their home to sell. One of the
first steps, and often one of the most difficult, is decluttering and
depersonalizing the space we call home. Time spent living in a house brings years
of knick knacks, family photos and torn and tattered furniture and fabrics. We
often fail to notice the wear and tear our carpet, drapes and bedspreads have
taken over the years. The hole in the throw pillow where our golden retriever
Sophie pulled out the stuffing or the dip in the sofa where dad has a direct
view to the television often goes unnoticed by household members, but focused
on by potential buyers. Thus, the first step in preparing a house to sell is to
pack up all the family photos, flowered vases and doilies knitted by Aunt Sue.
Next, paint the walls a neutral color such as beige, white or the light gray in
the bedroom below.
After
this, minimize the amount of furniture in the room. Two nightstands, a dresser
and a bed will help to make the room appear larger, but still able to hold the
basic furniture necessities. A queen size bed is ideal because it won’t
overwhelm the room like a king-size would, but it will demonstrate the
flexibility of the bedroom so that it can be used by both adults and children.
The next step is the bedding. One of the simplest options is Bed in a Bag such as this one from Walmart which
includes the sheet set, comforter, pillow shams and throw pillows all for one
low price.
After
making the bed, the next step is placing a variety of objects on the
nightstands, so the room doesn’t remain stark, but instead looks lived in,
allowing buyers to picture themselves living there. Books, candles and plants can all add touches
of color without overwhelming the space. Be sure to keep the number of objects
on each space to a minimum. If the object is large, you can get away with just
one piece in the center of the table. But if the objects are small as in this
bedroom, it is a good idea to position them in groups of 2 or 3 in order to
decorate, but not clutter the space. By following these steps, you can take any
bedroom from bland and boring to bright and beautiful.
