Don’t Forget the Garage

When staging their house, most buyers focus on the more obvious tasks - putting away the personal items, painting the walls, fixing the furniture, clearing the clutter, and creating curb appeal. While these are all jobs that need to be completed, many buyers forget to address the areas that may not seem like a priority. Often these forgotten zones, such as the garage, can be the place where all the extra stuff that was cleared from the rest of the house gets disposed of. These seemingly unimportant rooms need not to be forgotten because buyers love houses that have lots of storage. And so to create a space to not only park the cars, but also store all the extra stuff that has accumulated over the years, follow these tips to make sure your garage is as ready for buyers as the rest of the house.

Tip #1
Clean the exterior to create curb appeal

Buyers first impression of a house is the one from the street and often the garage is front and center when they first approach the house. Make sure your garage doors and walls are not only clean of spider webs and dirt, but also fix any broken panels or peeling paint to make sure buyers’ first impression is a positive one that makes them want to see what’s on the inside.

Tip #2
Hang tools and ladders to clear floor space

By hanging shovels, saws, and leaf blowers, you not only create more floor space, but you also make your garage safer, saving people from stepping on sharp tools and other objects that could cause injuries. Turning ladders on their side and hanging them on hooks also keeps them out of the way, leaving more room for storing items and parking cars.

Tip #3
Use containers to contain the clutter

Plastic containers, boxes, baskets and bins can all help to hold extension cords and garden hoses, nails and screws, and even light bulbs and light switches, giving your shelves and your garage a more organized look. Adding shelves along the walls also adds more storage space, which all homeowners need and want.

Tip #4
Don’t forget to look up

The ceiling is a place that is often overlooked when it comes to storing items, but by hanging a big, sturdy shelf overhead, items like snowboards and luggage racks, that are only used rarely, can be kept out of mind and out of reach until they are needed.

Tip #5
Tuck away the tools

Whether it’s small and orange or big and black, a tool box is a worthwhile investment to keep tools organized and in one place. Hammers, screwdrivers and measuring tapes are all easy to find when they are stored in their own boxes or drawers, ready for your next DIY project.

Tip #6
Organize the toys

Tennis rackets, skateboards, bats and balls often take up much garage space, especially when they have nowhere to be kept. Invest in an organizer that can hold all your sports equipment and other toys and can help keep all the toys in one place.

Tip # 7
Hook and hang the bicycles

Bikes left leaning on kickstands or pushed into bike racks take up garage space where dad’s car, not the kid’s bike, could be parked. By hanging bikes on hooks from the ceiling or a shelf allows the parents to take back their garage and fit the sports car or SUV inside.

Tips #8
Park the cars

Often homeowners have so many things stuffed into the garage, they cannot make room to park their cars inside. By organizing the garage using the previous tips, you may be able to park cars in your garage and give buyers what they are ultimately seeking - more space.
